HOPE IS THE THING WITH FEATHERS

Hope is the thing with feathers

That perches in the soul,

And sings the tune without the words,

And never stops at all,

.

And sweetest in the gale is heard;

And sore must be the storm

That could abash the little bird

That kept so many warm.

.

I've heard it in the chilliest land,

And on the strangest sea;

Yet, never, in extremity,

It asked a crumb of me.

Theme: Spirituality

The core purpose of this poem is hope. Emily believes that hope is a positive force in people's lives. It frees us from despair and empowers us to move on. It merely empowers us and asks for nothing in return. Emily Dickenson was influenced by the people in her life, that’s why her poetry contains themes of death, love, and friendship. The line that I relate to the most is "Hope is the thing with feathers, That perches in the soul." The poem teaches that society should be able to cope with everything and the flame of hope must never diminish. Hope leads to the growth and development of society.
