THERE WILL COME SOFT RAINS

There will come soft rains and the smell of the ground,

And swallows circling with their shimmering sound;

.

And frogs in the pools singing at night,

And wild plum trees in tremulous white,

.

Robins will wear their feathery fire

Whistling their whims on a low fence-wire;

.

And not one will know of the war, not one

Will care at last when it is done.

.

Not one would mind, neither bird nor tree

If mankind perished utterly;

.

And Spring herself, when she woke at dawn,

Would scarcely know that we were gone.

Theme: Man and Nature

This poem points out a very beautiful feature of nature that nature remains the same and beautiful while man is utterly destroyed because of war, mother nature will go on without man, as if nothing had happened. My favourite verse is “There will come soft rains and the smell of the ground”. The poem talks about the alarming fact of technology that humans have supposedly become extinct as a result of nuclear weapons. Moreover, the poet converses the capability and extent of technology in our lives, as well as the concept of mortality. The destructive results of technology and science can be seen in the contemporary world in the form of wars and also major climatic changes.
